Costa Rica River Lodge

We placed 1st in an private competition for the design of a residential complex in the Costa Rican location of Bahia Ballena, found in short distance from the sea. We chose an visually subtle shape of the main buildings, using horizontal masses supported by subtle columns. We places amorphous huts in the hill of the forest, shape was inspired by an armadillo. The only access road to the future resort opens at the platform, from here it is possible to move only on foot along the paths. The sloping terrain is partially forest, but during heavy rains, mud literally rolls down through it, so it is not suitable to build houses with foundations here. Part of the land, at the foot of the hill, has a flooding hazard, because the meander of the river runs through it, therefore we avoided placing any structures here.
